Infrared thermography observations of crystallization fouling in a plate heat exchanger

Heat exchanger performance is significantly reduced in the presence of impurities one or both fluid streams, frequently by deposits inversely soluble salts. Accordingly, immense efforts were and still are spent to combat, predict, investigate such fouling problems mitigate reduction heat transfer performance. In this study, calcium carbonate crystallization a corrugated plate was investigated. Fouling monitored using temperature flow measurements, and, for first time, coupled with infrared thermography observations. We show clear measurable local difference between clean fouled conditions, regardless operating conditions. Infrared measurements permit conclusions about distribution spatial location areas severe fouling. Compared state, completely skewed isotherms after point out channel blockage obstructions, resulting large scale re-distribution within channel. The presented results exhibit benefit approach studies serve as foundation future research dynamic operation, transient response, computational models.
